In the Childhood series (mostly in Europe and Africa) I photograph children with mysterious expressions, seemingly burdened beyond their years. Many of the images were taken during Portugal's Carnival celebration, when children spend the week in costume. Their parents were always proud and eager to have their child's photograph taken. The trick for me was to get the shot before they were too "posed".
